"Gun culture ended up being the thing that killed him."That's the cartoon again, in his words, and that's the "joke." America holding the gun. Not Tyler Robinson. So I put Tyler back in the picture.

Tyler's actions are wrong but his assessment of Kirk wasn't.There it is. He didn't slip. He looked at the killer's reason and signed his name under it. Notice how there's no joke anymore. Nobody's laughing. He's treating this like a serious intellectual debate all of a sudden. One option I have, if I wanted to be cruel, is to provoke him further with a leading question... so he wastes his time writing 10 more paragraphs to me... then I wouldn't read it. That's a move of pure contempt, and it's one I have in my belt, because I'm in control here. Notice who's leading who. But that's not how I do things. As far as I'm concerned, the battle is already over.

Daniel's utterance and your response, reminded me of the parable of the Pharisee and tax collector in Luke 18:9-14. Jesus concludes that the humble (Kirk follower), rather than the self-righteous (Daniel), was justified before God, emphasizing that those who exalt themselves will be humbled. Thanks for another entertaining lesson, Clay!

I think Daniel is the second contestant to appear in the Arena who predicts Charlie's fade into the memory hole by invoking the supposedly-forgotten name of Rush Limbaugh. But, if Rush Limbaugh is forgotten, how is it that these clowns would even think to mention him??? One might easily conclude that they are accidentally predicting Charlie's immortal memory.
0CClayAuthorThat's very perceptive, Paul. They pick the most famous name they can think of to prove nobody remembers anyone. The argument defeats itself.

I love these examples. I'm using them to sharpen my own skills on the opening volley. For this one, I think the key question for Daniel is: "What standards do we want to apply to ourselves when someone we profoundly disagree with dies?"
Here was my practice response:
I understand that you strongly disagreed with Charlie Kirk and considered some of his views racist. But I’m curious about the next step. Even if we assume your characterization of him is completely justified, what principle gets us from “this person held hateful views” to celebrating people metaphorically urinating on his grave?
That distinction matters. We can condemn someone's ideas without surrendering our own humanity when that person dies. In fact, that's probably when the principle matters most.
You don't have to admire Charlie Kirk. You don't have to rehabilitate his views. You don't even have to mourn him. But if our standard becomes people I consider hateful deserve hatred even in death, we've preserved the hatred and merely changed its target.
I'd rather criticize bad ideas while they're alive—and refuse to become what I objected to after they're gone.0- PPaulFounder45(edited)
That's very good. It would probably fall on deaf ears and blind eyes; but it's a good play to the audience.

Daniel blames and condemns the "gun culture" of America. I blame and condemn the "murder culture" of America. Daniel sounds like he's squarely inside of it.

That is well put, Paul.

Eric Hoffer was a longshoreman on the docks in San Francisco. He was self-taught and authored "The True Believer." We are exposing blind fanaticism here.
