ChatGPT lied to them. I had the source

and I am only going to say this once

·2 min read

Last night, a fellow writer reached out to me privately. She told me it was killing her that I might be using AI to write. We went back and forth for a while about the implications of AI for writers. By the end, she told me she appreciated me and that we were pondering the same questions. Best argument I have had in a while.

But her message forced me to think about something I keep seeing and have never addressed publicly.

People come into my comments and tell me my Sowell quotes are fake. They paste them into ChatGPT, ask it if the quote is real, and ChatGPT tells them no. It tells them that I'm lying to them. So they come back to me with righteous indignation, all confident that I am a fraud who needs to be exposed, and they're the hero that's going to swoop in and show the world what I'm up to.

Then I pull up the source. Book. Chapter. Page number. They either apologize or they disappear.
