Last Wednesday night in Huntsville, Texas, a man strapped to a gurney apologized to a family watching him through a window.

He was about to be executed for killing a convenience store clerk named Vickie Swartout during a robbery in Silsbee, Texas, in 2000. The family on the other side of the glass was hers.

He was asked if he had any last words.
