His book "The White Pill" is one that I highly recommend. It's a history of the Soviet Union.
It's not a dense account of historical details and facts; it's a story that will punch you in the gut over and over, like a great movie. I will admit, I was moved to tears at several points in the book. The whole point is to show you that even the most brutal, seemingly permanent totalitarian regimes can be defeated by ordinary human resilience. There is always a reason to have hope...
